SECRETARY FOR EDUCATION OPENS £32 MILLION CLYDEBANK COLLEGE

SMC Jenkins & Marr’s new £32M college campus for Clydebank College was officially opened on Thursday 20th September 2007 to coincide with the return of Cunard's QE2 Ocean Liner to Glasgow to mark the 40th anniversary of her launch from the site. The College is the major catalyst in a bold new urban regeneration project, on the site of the former John Brown Shipyard, in Clydebank.

SMC Jenkins & Marr were closely involved in the development of the site’s master-plan and working intensely with the College staff, were able to rationalise the College’s accommodation requirements into the new bespoke facility. Lengthy design workshops with the staff ensured the new campus has precisely tailored accommodation for delivery of its curriculum, now and in the future.

Clydebank College, the college that once trained the apprentices which built the most talked about ships in the world is now pivotal in helping rebuild the community back to its original glory.

The new £32 million building, formally opened by Secretary for Education and Lifelong learning Fiona Hyslop MSP, was funded primarily by the Scottish Funding Council and European Regional Development fund.

“This was an exciting opportunity to create a dynamic new urban context, with the College building drawing people back onto the river’s edge, via the creation of new streets and urban squares, helping re-connect the town to the river’s edge”.
